BMC restricts gathering for home installation of Ganesh idols

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said only five people should participate in arrival and immersion processions of domestic Lord Ganesh idols during the Ganpati festival next month in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The BMC, which is spearheading Mumbai's fight against coronavirus, on Thursday made a special appeal to citizens in this regard ahead of the festival to curb the spread of  COVID-19  in the metropolis, which has recorded more than 1 lakh cases and nearly 6,000 deaths so far. Besides public installation of Lord Ganesh idols, thousands of people install such idols at home and immerse them on different days during the 10-day festival, the most popular religious event in Maharashtra. Requesting people to refrain from doing any act that leads to the spread of COVID-19, the civic body, in a release, warned that violators may invite strict action under relevant sections of the Epidemic Act 1897, the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and the Indian Penal Code. The matter came up for hearing through video-conferencing before a bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, requested the bench to adjourn the matter for two weeks. The bench said the matter would be taken up for hearing on Friday next week. The Centre had earlier sought dismissal of the pleas and informed the top court on July 2 that it has issued individual orders on a case-to-case basis for cancellation of visas and blacklisting of 2,765 foreign nationals. As per the information available, 205 FIRs have been lodged against the foreign Tablighi Jamaat members by 11 states and 2,765 such foreigners have been blacklisted so far, the Centre had said in its affida

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: 'Vintage Wine' at 39, intriguing as ever

Mahendra Singh Dhoni seems to be present everywhere but is to be found nowhere. As one of modern India's most loved cricketer turns 39, tributes flowed on social media, glowing eulogies were written but intriguingly yet inevitably, the former India captain remained far from the madding crowd. Indian captains from Tiger Pataudi to Virat Kohli have been characters in their own right but no one quite like Dhoni. The more one tries to decode the man, the mystique grows, leaving everyone as befuddled as those batsmen who saw him whip off the bails in a flash. For the past 16 years, he has been a national obsession. Now, the discussion has shifted to will he, won't he or perhaps when will he drop the dreaded 'R' word during the COVID-induced break. His die-hard fans hate these kind of discussions and the detractors continue with a smirk. They both argue knowing there's no closure and the man at the centre of it all goes on as if never bothered.
